SPRING 2015 KICKOFF: Engage Them from Day 1

Looking for ideas about how you might use Kahoot? Check out Matt Miller's post on his Ditch That Textbook blog, "10 Ways to Electrify Your Classroom with Kahoot!" Here are a few sample ideas from his post:

  • Reading comprehension — After reading an article or chapter in a textbook, Kahoot! can help you assess how much students remembered.
  • Current events — Because a Kahoot! can be created so simply, you can give students questions on the most current of topics. If part of your class is following news, a quick Kahoot! can check how up to date they are.
  • Identify images — Artwork. Diagrams. Photos of terms. A picture can bring a concept to life, and they can be uploaded (YouTube videos, too) to Kahoot! questions. Use them to ask a question instead of words to better illustrate your content.
  • Turn learners to leaders — Kahoot! promotes this great use of its site: using questioning as an assessment tool. Instead of teachers creating Kahoots, students can create them. Their ability to write good questions and create answers (even the wrong ones!) shows a lot about how well they understand content.

DISCUSSION: Now that you've seen a few examples, how would YOU use Kahoot?

DISCUSSION: Now that you've seen a few examples, how would YOU use Thinglink?

  • Save on real estate in Canvas!! Have a Thinglink image with links to the various Abnormal Psych disorders.
  • Student project: students create ThingLink image on a particular person (theorist, author, politician, historical figure, ...)
  • ThingLink a map!! E.g., areas on campus students can get involved in.

"Storytelling with maps using Google Tour Builder."

Here are two Tour Builder samples (you will need to have Google Earth installed to be able to access these):

Ideas from "Mr. Bradford Online" blog for using Tour Builder:

  • Tour a country or civilization: Could be used for teaching geography, topography, climate, etc., of an area.
  • Tour your local community: Create tour of local institutions, businesses, landmarks, etc.
  • Tour famous scientific discoveries: E.g., create a tour of Darwin’s trip around the world and label where he made his discoveries.
  • Create a tour of famous geological features: Create a tour of famous earthquakes, volcanoes, oceans, etc.
  • Tour the setting of a story: Create a map of locations and insert media.
  • Compose a narrative essay: Students use the "tell a story" field to compose different parts of the narrative. Students can use the map/media options to expand on what’s going on in the story.

QUESTIONS FROM TODAY'S WORKSHOP:

  1. Is there a way to use Kahoot asynchronously, for online instructors?
  2. In ThingLink, is there a way to edit the format of the text in the popup box so that the wrapping isn't so wonky?
  3. Is there a way to have students work collaboratively on a ThingLink?
  4. In general, I want to start allowing students to use their cellphones in class for some of the newer tech tools, but I don't want them using their phones for other things!! Suggestions?

 ANSWERS:

  1. We will think about this one... that's not the way Kahoot was designed, since it places a time limit on each question, so unless the students all logged in at the same time (so that it's online, but synchronous, rather than asynchronous), it probably wouldn't work very well!
  2. Not that we know of.
  3. We'll take a look!
  4. Here is a sample statement that you could use:

"CELL PHONES will be used only for specified class-related activities while you are in class. Taking calls, making calls, and texting during class are all very disruptive to the learning environment, and will result in "anti-participation points" (point deductions)."
