Session 58: There's an App for That

Canvas App Center

In Summer 2013, Instructure made the Canvas App Center available -- currently that means you have access to 125 Apps that you could include directly in your Canvas course! As we'll discuss today, many of these apps are only useful if you already have an account or special access, but there are still dozens of the Apps that are SUPER-easy to add, don't have special requirements, and will add a lot of value to your course.

We've done some initial scouting for you, as you'll see in this "Canvas Apps List" handout; in the document, we've indicated which apps are SUPER-easy to add and use, and which apps would present more obstacles before you can use them. We've also given "thumbs up" (easy to add, high value added to the course) or "thumbs down" (difficult to add, limited use, or does not work as advertised) reviews on some of the tools, but remember, that's just our opinion! You may find that an app we weren't crazy about works great for you and your students.

Take a look at the list for yourself, mark the apps that look most promising for your courses, and then follow the instructions below to add those apps to Canvas (we recommend testing in your Sandbox site) and evaluate them for yourself.

CANVAS APPS LIST (September 2013)

NOTE that this list is up-to-date this week, but things change quickly in the world of technology - apps disappear, change names, and new apps emerge. This is a perishable document!!

SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION:

What app(s) will you try? What do you hope it will add to the teaching/learning in your course?

Using the App Center to Add Apps to Your Course

As always, we recommend that for the most up-to-date documentation you go straight to the source: the Canvas Guides; in this case, we found this handout on how to add an app to your Canvas course through the App Center to be useful.

Adding apps is pretty straightforward, though - here's all you need to do:

  1. Log in to your Canvas course (http://learn.maricopa.edu)
  2. Click the Settings link at the bottom of your COURSE navigation on the left-hand side of the screen. NOTE: the fact that you use COURSE Settings, rather than GLOBAL Settings, indicates that you add apps on a course-by-course basis.
  3. In the Course Settings area, click the "Apps" tab at the top of your screen.
  4. In the Apps Center, just scroll through and click on the icon of any app you wish to investigate!
  5. When you click on an app icon, you will see a screen with more details about that particular app. If you decide you want to try it, just click the "Add Tool" button (number 3 in the screenshot below):

Domo eats any of Mary's baked goods,

and he also eats faculty members who don't give their feedback about the Technology Tuesdays series! ;-)
