An easy way to start locating copyright-free media is to search Creative Commons licensed material on Flickr. There are literally millions of images, even with the least restrictive "Attribution" license. Here is a brief explanation of the CC-license types, from creativecommons.org:
As you can see from the image below, a Flickr account isn't necessary to access the CC-licensed images. However, it is very handy to have an account in order to bookmark the images that you really like.
Fotoflexer is a free, extremely easy-to-use online photo editor. In addition to the "free and easy" part, fotoflexr allows you to easily retrieve photos for editing from a variety of sources:
your computer
your flickr account
your facebook account
your myspace account
your photobucket account
the web, if you have the URL for the photo
many other social networking/social media sites!
